How to Make a Post and Rail Baby Quilt

Image
Hello Dear Friends I have just finished and delivered my latest baby quilt. It's the same pattern as the last one but this one has a strawberries and cream vibe. I used a jelly roll - strips are already cut and ready to be curated to form the blocks. Sew three strips together and iron the seams to the dark side (rather than ironing flat). Trim the sewn strips to make a square. Sew blocks together to form your design, ie horizontal then vertical, then horizontal etc. Cut the borders and sew onto the quilt top. Make your quilt sandwich, ensure that you have an excess of wadding and backing on all sides. These will be trimmed after quilting. Quilt your quilt top. Cut your 2.5" strips for the binding. Sew each length together as in the photo. Trim the seam, as shown. Sew the border onto the quilt top. Finished! One Post and Rail baby quilt. Q P  by Rhonda

Hello Posy

Image
Hello my dear friends I'm feeling so good that my latest quilt is finished and is now in its new home. I made this Hello Posy lap quilt for one of my beautiful daughters in law. Their home is so stylish and decorated in neutral tones. Alex picked her fabrics and I am very happy with the finished product. The Symbolism of Quilting " Q uilts and quilting are used to convey certain themes of self expression, union of opposite values or people, the formation of close bonds among women and kin, heritage, history, family, comfort, love and commitment." Fence and Rail Baby Quilt

Image
Hello my dear friends I am so pleased to have made this quilt for a very special childhood friend of my daughter's. They have played together, went to school together, played netball together, celebrated birthdays together and now they are all grown up. It's hard to believe. Kate's little bundle of joy arrived 7 weeks early but we all know that wonderful surprises come in small packages. We truly wish Kate and her growing family much love, support and friendship. This pattern is called Fence and Rail.  It is made up of left overs from a quilt that I have just about finished.  This quilt is really easy, so don't forget to contact me if you would like to have a go at creating your own Fence and Rail Quilt. Thank you Alex and Ben for providing the cute nursery and props. QP  by Rhonda

How to Make a Hello Posy Quilt

Image
Hello dear friends, I found this quilt on Southern Charm Quilts and loved it. I am making it for my daughter-in-law. She chose the fabric palette. You might remember this photo from my last post, Choosing Your Fabric. After cutting out all the pieces of fabric for each block, I could start sewing. Sew what will be the centre diamond onto each larger square. Do the same for the 4 squares. Trim the corners and iron back, making a square again. Sew 4 squares together, forming the diamond in the centre. Add opposite borders. Sew on the other 2 opposite borders and the block is complete. I now have 9 blocks. STAY TUNED

How To Choose Your Fabrics

Image
Hello my dear friends, Choosing my fabrics would have to be my favourite part of quilting. I get a little thrill walking into the shop full of wonderful expectations of finding the "perfect" fabrics. What comes first - the pattern or the fabrics? A bit of both I think. Sometimes you may have a colour scheme in mind, then you find a pattern. A great place to start is Pinterest or just google the type of quilt you would like to create. For example Baby Quilts, Autumn Quilts, Puff Quilts, Modern Quilts, Traditional Quilts. Add the words For Beginners, Medium Ability or even Difficult Quilts. Companies such as Missouri Star Quilt Co., Jordan's Fabrics or Fat Quarter Shop offer step by step tutorials for many patterns. What will your fabrics design include? Solid colours, florals, spots, stripes, dogs, cats - the choices are endless. If all this seems too overwhelming and confusing try curated fabric collections.  These can be purchased as fat quarters, charm packs, jelly ro...

Jenny's Easy Carpenter's Star Quilt

Hello my dear friends A new year of quilting lays ahead for me. I have just finished a quilt for a dear friend of my mum's. I'm really excited to see her reaction as she doesn't know I've been making one for her. She admired one that I made for my aunt, so I always intended to make her one too. Lots and lots of quilting. As long as you don't look too closely I'm happy with the end result. QP by Rhonda

Christmas Table Runner and Placemats

Hello dear friends I had the pleasure of making a Christmas table runner and placemats for my beautiful friend Dianne. Making this project gave me so much pleasure knowing that in a small way we had a wonderful connection last Christmas. Dianne is a talented photographer and sent me these photos of her Christmas day table. I think you'll agree her table is spectacular. QP by Rhonda
