Elizabeth Gliske Bulow

 Hello dear friends,

Elizabeth Gliske Bulow is my next quilter extraordinaire.  I met Elizabeth through a Facebook Group called Lo & Behold Patterns.  I asked if anyone would like to be a quilting pen pal with me.  I received lots of replies and I now have a core group of ladies who have become my very special friends.  They tell me about the USA and Canada and I tell them about Australia.  It is so interesting learning about their cultures and traditions.  We love chatting about our quilts that we are working on and I feel very blessed to call these amazing women my friends.

Elizabeth is a wife and mother of 3 beautiful little girls.  I don't know how she has the time or energy to make her stunning quilts.  Elizabeth's family live in a home that reminds me of The Little House on the Prairie in such magnificent countryside!

What is your sewing history?
"Growing up I sewed doll clothes on mom's sewing machine (mostly made a tangled mess) then didn't sew for 20+ years. When I bought my first house, my mom bought me a sewing machine as a housewarming gift. Our small town only has a few shops, but one of them was a quilt shop. I started buying fabric and sewing quilts. About a year later, I became pregnant so I made a baby quilt." "Then I joined a Quilt-along on Instagram (QAL), by Sharon Holland and Maureen Cracknell. They really taught me the foundations of quilting: choosing good fabric, trimming blocks, measuring accurately, sewing 1/4”, etc. (By the way, the QALs are archived on Sharon’s website. Great starter place for new quilters). I now enjoy QALs since the designer provides lots of tips and normally breaks down the pattern over a few weeks and does blog postings with tricks and tips. For example, during the Lo & behold QAL for Deco Quilt, the designer describes her vision for the color layout and how selecting certain contrasting colors really makes a certain part of the quilt "POP" and shine." What is your favourite quilt that you have made? "My most recent quilt tends to be my favorite, but my current favorite is the "Deco Quilt". I made it for my youngest baby. I love the contrast between the small pieces (little squares are 1" or 2.5 cms) and the dark blue is so beautiful! This quilt is a challenging one but so rewarding! You must be very accurate with your piecing or the blocks won't align properly. A few of my blocks were a bit off...but I made it work."
"Lo & Behold Stitchery wrote the pattern for the Deco Quilt and it's actually the second quilt I've made by her. I love all her patterns! They are so unique and beautiful! Knitted Star was the first quilt I made, and it is the one I'm currently trying to finish quilting...but that is a different story. Deco Quilt is such a lovely design and with strip piecing, the baby size quilt went together fast, but looks very complicated. I actually made it as a baby gift for a friend of a friend but I couldn't bear to give it away. I of course made a different quilt for their baby. It's less difficult than the Knitted Star Quilt, but it isn't for a beginner. Many pieces finish at 1" square but if you are careful with your cutting and take your time sewing, the results are absolutely wonderful!

Next project?
I actually plan to make a throw size quilt of the Deco Pattern since I love it that much."

  1. That is a stunning quilt!! I might have to look into the pattern myself and see if I’m brave enough to give it a go. Thanks so much for sharing
